The present oil painting by Henri Plotin (born 1939) bears the provocative title ‘Queen Elisabeth on Her Most Loved Beagle’ and is striking not only for its imposing size. Also the motive is as unusual as it is impressive. On an oversized beagle, featured in a green countryside, sits ‘Queen Elisabeth’ depicted as a nude with lush corkscrew curls. The young woman is tied to the dog with the help of blue ribbons, which are also wrapped around the woman’s legs. This gives the painting an erotic component, which to some extent merges with the surreal. Is it a fantasy or a dream of the artist? Why did he choose to paint the English Queen in this pose? We don’t know.

The painting is signed and dated lower right, ‘Henri Plotin 71’. On the reverse, it is titled ‘Queen Elisabeth on Her Most Loved Beagle’, inscribed ‘Done by Henri Plotin in 1971/Apr./Berlin/ British Sektor’, and labeled ‘Gert Neuhaus’.The painting is optically in good condition, showing some minor wear. The color surface displays a slight crackle, scratches and some overpainting at the body and face of the woman. The frame is in good condition with a major nick on the left side. The overall dimensions with frame are 180 x 180 cm. The stretcher frame measures 170 x 170 cm.
