The oil painting ‘The Question of the Cardinal Directions’ by Uwe Bremer was part of the collection ‘Magic in Art’ by the magician Mr. Cox. The German painter and printmaker is known for his surreal compositions inhabited by grotesque figures and mythical creatures. Bremer creates his strange imagery from a structure of lines and shapes, combining geometry, ornaments and writing. Filled with wit and irony, his works never completely disclose themselves to the viewer, but continue to amaze with their strange peculiarities. Theme of this oil painting is the disclosure of the cardinal directions and planets and measuring devices appear in the composition.



The painting is titled lower right in the depiction ‘Zur Frage der Himmelsrichtungen’. The work is in very good condition with minimal traces of wear. The dimensions of the wooden panel are 170 x 125 cm, and the total dimensions are framed 174.5 x 129 cm.



Uwe Bremer (born 1940)

Uwe Bremer was born near Erfurt in 1940 but grew up in Berlin and Hamburg, where he attended the art school Alsterdamm. In 1964 he founded the atelier Werkstatt Rixdorfer Drucke together with couple of other artists. Bremer now lives and works in Gümse, Lower Saxony as a painter and graphic artist.



‘Magic in Art’ Collection of the Magician Mr. Cox

The German magician Mr. Cox (1932-2012) collected a large number artworks of contemporary artists within the scope of the art project ‘Magic in Art’. He had the collection on display at his magic art theatre and magic art museum in Lüneburg (Germany). Mr. Cox, born as Jürgen Wolfram in 1932 in Stettin, started his career as an illusionist in 1958. Shortly thereafter, he abandoned his profession as a detective superintendent. In 1964, he won the first prize of the Grand Prix of the World Championships of Magic, and in 1973, he came second in the world championship in Paris together with his professional and life partner ‘Annabelle’.

Most of the artists who are represented in the art collection were close friends of Mr. Cox. ‘Magic in Art’ offers a multi-layered view on the world of the illusionists and magicians. Amongst the artists of the collection are Reinhard Zado, Uwe Bremer, Bruno Bruni, Paul Wunderlich, Simon Dittrich and Toni Llabrés Campins.
