Music fills the air – a major work by the Berlin artist Peter Keil filled with expressiveness and joie de vivre

Here we have got a very impressive major work of large size by the painter of the Berlin ‘Junge Wilde’, Peter Keil. In spontaneous and wild mode of expression, he depicts a piano in almost real size with a flower vase in the foreground. The observer feels invited to take part in the imagery, to listen to the music of the piano sound, that Keil creates here in bright colours.



The painting is signed, inscribed and dated ‘Peter Keil Berlin 94’ on the lower right. On the verso it is titled, signed and inscribed in paint ‘Flügel mit Blumen / Peter Keil / Berlin’. The canvas is slightly wavy and paint shows minimal craquelure or has flaked off at some parts, especially in the lower left area. The dimensions are 135 x 280 cm.



Peter Keil (born 1942)

Peter Keil learned painting from his mentor Otto Nagel (1894-1967) in Berlin. Afterwards he trained as a metal worker. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin from 1959 to 1961. During the 1960s, he spent some time in London and Paris, as well as on the Balearic island Mallorca, where he got to work with Joan Miró. In the 1970s, he took more classes at the Berlin University of the Arts and got to know Georg Baselitz, Rainer Fetting and Markus Lüpertz. Next to paintings, the work by Keil encompasses also sculptures and ceramics. The oeuvre by Kreil has been the subject of a number of national and international single exhibitions. A major part of his work is located at the Keil Collection in Heidelberg, and besides that some works of his are held by the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Kunsthaus Zurich, and the Kesseler Collection in Orlando, Florida.
