This impressive work on canvas was made by the South African artist Willem Sternberg de Beer and depicts a leopard in the shaded brushwood of a tree. The leopard is spread in Africa, Asia and at the very edge of Europe. The cat is the fourth largest of its kind and unmistakably recognizable by its special coat pattern. The elegant animal is shown in a graceful resting position. The artist has executed the black rosettes of its coat, its paws, the whiskers and its eyes in an extreme realistic style.



The work is in very good condition considering its age. It is signed lower right ‘WILLEM S DE BEER’. The wooden frame only shows minimal traces of age and use. The framed work measures 88 x 123.5 cm and the stretcher measures 71 x 107 cm.



Willem Sternberg de Beer (born 1941)

Willem Sternberg de Beer was born in Transvaal in 1941 and studied at the University of Pretoria, before dedicating himself exclusively to painting. In 1985, he moved to the United Kingdom. Works by Willem Sternberg de Beer are found today in the collection of the British Royal Family. Numerous solo exhibitions, such as in the New York Sportsman's Edge Gallery, present his works. Being a member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists, he is mostly known for his extremely vibrant animal paintings. His most famous work ‘Snow Leopard in the Himalayas’ was sold at Christie’s for over 7.000 euros, in 2007. (cbo)
