DESCRIPTION; This is a rare and early Shaker dovetailed paint decorated box or chest from New England circa late 1700s to early 1800s. The Shaker painted chest is handmade of white pine. These early Shaker handmade chests were used in the Community Houses for storage and could have been used by a child for his or her belongings. The Shaker chest is paint decorated with Best Color, being that of "Ochre Orange" that was so well known in the Shaker Communities. The inside of the Shaker chest is painted a bright vivid “Salmon” another traditional Shaker color. The sides of the Shaker chest are finely dovetailed. There is an early repair by the Shakers where they used square and rose head nails to secure (see photos). The Shaker chest still retains the original brass hinges and a hand wrought brass carry handle on the top. There is an older latch and clasp on the front of the Shaker chest that is not original to the antique piece. There is an original bottom board that is attached with wrought square nails. There are minor imperfections as shown in the photos that does not affect the character, strength or durability of this antique early rare chest.
