DESCRIPTION: This is a large handmade dovetailed tin lined copper pot or pan. By the 17th century, it was common for a western kitchen to contain a number of skillets, baking pans, a kettle and several pots, along with a variety of pothooks and trivets. In the American colonies, local blacksmiths made these items from wrought iron, brass, or copper. Pots were formed with thick copper sheets with a thin inner layer of tin. The copper provided the best thermal conductivity of common metals and therefore results in even heating. Copper is reactive with acidic foods and the tin lining prevents the copper from reacting with acidic foods. The dovetailed tin lined copper pot is made from two pieces of copper. One forms the body of the pot and the other is shaped into the long large handle. The fine dovetailing the circles the bottom and up the side of the copper pot. The seams are brazed using molten brass like glue for a perfect seal (see photos). The rim of the large copper dovetailed pot is rolled for smoothness. The handle is long, wide and tongue shaped. The handle is attached with three large rivets to the sides forming a large heart shape. The large dovetailed copper pots rests with a flat bottom.
