DESCRIPTION: This is a huge copper five gallon liquid measure from New England circa 1800s. Stores and farms used five gallon liquid measures to sell and dispense milk and liquids to customers. The 5 gallon copper measure has a large wide padded swinging handle with reinforcement at center and two tipping stationary handles near the bottom. The swing handle is made of copper and is attached to the 5 gallon copper measure by copper rivets. The 5 gallon copper measure tapers and is graduated with a flared wraparound lip-rim or flange that served as "double pouring spouts". The 5 gallon copper measure is graduated with 5 ribs that serve as measuring lines: 1 gallon, 2 gallons, 3 gallons, 4 gallons, and 5 gallons. The 5 gallon copper measure has two folded seams on the sides, which form the body. There are double copper crossbars upon the bottom that serves to secure the heavy weight of the liquid and as a footed base.
