Item Details
Description
Mexican Folk Art School, [20th Century]. "Carved Coconut Coin Bank (Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera)". Coconut sculpture. c1960s?. Carved in script "Frida Y Diegito.". Generally good condition. Three cracks in the mouth area. No losses to shell. Provenance: From a highly important private collection, Mexico City. Dimensions: 3 3/4 in. height x 4 3/4 in. length x 3 1/4 depth. Probably from the area around the city of Vera Cruz, Mexico, based on the forms created by prisoners in the San Juan de Ulua prison in that city, though possibly from Jalapa (Xalapa), the capital of the state of Vera Cruz. Intricately carved coconut, good patina. Face on one end with a mouth formed by a wedge-shaped hole below a mustache, nose, and mother-of-pearl eyes. Depicts Diego Rivera on one side, Frida Kahlo on the other. Adorned with a carved Mexican eagle, flowers, etc. An unusual and seldom seen form of Mexican folk art. [23524] |200| {K90}
