Description
Mexican Maskmaker, [19th Century]. "Mexican Mask [Traditional - 0138]. Chantolo Mask, State of Veracruz [Mexico]". Hand-carved, hand-painted polychromed natural hardwood sculpture. End of the 19th Century. A "danced" mask. Not made for the tourist trade or for sale, but created by the indigenous person to be used only in a ceremonial dance. Overall condition good. Provenance: From a highly important private collection, consisting of over 2,000 masks, Mexico City. Approx. 6 1/4in high, 5 1/4in wide, 2 1/2in deep (155mm x 135mm x 70mm). KM Inv #MA0036.
