Description
This wooden nicho is from the late 19th Century from the Southern part of Mexico. Dimensions: 15.5"H x 8" x 4.5". The Christ of Poison is named this because of a seventeenth century legend. A greedy, envious man poisoned another who was known for his generosity and good heart. When this good man went to Christ¥s altar to venerate him, he kissed his feet as he did everyday. Retracting his legs and turning black the Christ figure absorbed all of the poison saving his life. The green wooden nicho encloses the black Christ crucified on a green cross. The Jesus portrayed here wears a tin crown. Paper flowers surround the piece and wallpaper covers the back of the nicho.
