Description
San Pedro Ocumicho is a traditional Tarascan village in the mountains of Michoacan. Their polychromed fantasy clay sculptures are unlike anything else made in Mexico. Many of their themes are made in conjunction with the many religious festivities such as the feast day of their patron saints San Pedro and San Pablo, the nativitiy, the Last Supper, the crucifixion etc. They also are known for the scenes of damnation and the horrors of hell with an extensive use of devils, monsters and serpents. But, oftentimes, the devil is seen as mischievous and irreverent and becomes the main character in these sculptures depicting scenes from everyday life. In this piece the artist used his imagination and sense of humor by describing two devil surgeons operating on another devil. They wear surgical masks and the patient has a very funny and maybe drugged expression on his face with his tongue hanging out of his mouth as they operate. A light bulb hangs from the arc and scissors are seen dropped on the floor in front of the operating table which does not instill confidence in their abilities whatsoever! Dimensions: 14"H x 9.5" x 9".
