Description
4-Coin Set Charles Barber
Includes the following in acrylic case:
- 1 Barber Half Dollar
- 1 Barber Quarter
- 1 Barber Dime
- 1 V Nickel
Charles E. Barber was born in London, England in 1840. The Barber family moved to the United States in 1852 where Charles' father, William Barber, found work as an engraver for a private business in New England. In 1869, the elder Barber was appointed as Chief Mint Engraver of the United States Mint, and he appointed Charles to an assistant engraver position at the Philadelphia mint. When his father passed away in 1879, Charles was appointed by President Rutherford B. Hayes as Chief Mint Engraver to take his father's place. Like his father, Charles held the position until his death on February 18, 1917. Although a coin's name typically derives from its design, several of Charles Barber's coins are known by his last name: the Barber Dime, the Barber Quarter and the Barber Half Dollar. Barber minted many pieces during his time as Chief Mint Designer, but he is best known for his 1883 Liberty Head nickel and the 1892 dime, quarter, and half dollar.
