Description
James Maurice Shipton, midshipman, handwritten navigation book aboard the ship, The Thunderer, together with letters from The Admiralty, The Royal Naval Museum and the National Maritime Museum and a copy of his obituary which appeared in the Gloucester Journal, on 6th March, 1886 The Thunderer, was built on the Thames in 1783 and was broken up in 1814, she took part in the Battle of Trafalgar, on the 21st October 1805. James Maurice Shipton, entered the Navy on 2nd May 1803, as midshipman on the Thunderer before moving to the ship, Hibernia. After leaving the Navy in around 1815, he spent the rest of his life as Russian vice-counsul at Gloucester. He died on 27th February 1886.
