Description
Abraham Lincoln: Pristine 1864 Ferrotype Locket or Charm. 1 1/16" or 27 mm. gilt brass locket with ferrotype portrait of Lincoln facing left (copied from the Brady photograph) within a raised brass frame with chased decorative design elements. The reverse side holds a stamped or engine-turned disc with raised lettering around the perimeter reading "Asked To Be Patented May 16. 1848. Plumbe Boston." Plumbe was a famous daguerreotypist. Apparently, this frame was originally designed to hold a daguerreotype. We are unaware if a patent was ever granted. It reminds us of the political brass shell lockets issued in 1844 and 1848. We have never seen another example. It is a very handsome piece!
