Arguably, the most famous illustrations of all time are those by Gustave Dore, created for this 1863 French edition. Dore's vision of the characters has become the most popular and most widely reprinted/imitated set of illustrations. They have become so famous as to have influenced subsequent readers along with artists and stage and film directors' ideas as to the physical appearance of the characters.
