Illustrated by Gustave Dore (1832-1883), "Don Quichotte de la Manche", Volume I, Paris, Librairie de L. Hachette et Cie, 1863, half leather binding with gilt edges, 459 pages, 12 1/2" x 16 7/8"; front cover detached from spine, back cover partially detached, extensive wear to corners of binding, stains to front and back covers, pages in good condition with spots of foxing, most of the pages between 289-459 have some moisture damage along right edge outside of text or illustration area--"Don Quixote" has been illustrated more often than any other literary work. Arguably, the most famous illustrations of all time are those by Gustave Dore, created for this 1863 French edition. Dore's vision of the characters has become the most popular and most widely reprinted/imitated set of illustrations. They have become so famous as to have influenced subsequent readers along with artists and stage and film directors' ideas as to the physical appearance of the characters.
