DESCRIPTION: This is an Appalachian handmade woven splint egg-gathering basket from Virginia circa 1800s. The Appalachian egg-gathering basket is handmade of oak splints. The Appalachian egg-gathering basket can be found on page 93 in the informative book “Baskets” written by Nancy N. Schiffer. The Appalachian egg-gathering basket is made in the splint rib-type style, which is the hardest design to execute in a handmade basket. The Appalachian egg-gathering basket has an inter-woven central rib pattern in the bottom. The sides of the Appalachian egg-gathering basket have a "God Eye" crossing and the handle is a high and wide bentwood oak band. MEASUREMENTS: 8 inches wide, 6 inches high not including handle, and 30 1/2 inches round in circumference.
