Description
CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION SWORD - US Ames 1850 Pattern Foot Officer's Sword and Scabbard, engraved at top fitting on scabbard "Presented to Lieut. H.C. Noyes by members of Co D, 19th Regiment, Main (sic) Volunteers". 36 1/2" long overall. Horace C. Noyes, from Belfast, was an original member as First Lieutenant of Company D in the Regiment, which formed up August 25, 1862 in Bath. He was promoted to Captain of Company B on Nov 1, 1862. It would appear he wore this sword for his period of service. The brass hilt is flattened at the knuckles, with the hooked scroll bent in towards blade. This sword was undoubtedly carried at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Va. December 11-15, where the 16th got pinned down on the right flank approaching Marye's Heights, between the plank road and Hurkamp's Tannery, and were decimated by Confederate artillery. Noyes resigned his commission on February 20, 1863 and returned home to Maine.
