Description
TRAVELING DESK - Brass Bound Mahogany Case, with top plate engraved "Dr. J. Bartlett, Jr, 1819". Green oilcloth slanted writing surface with compartments beneath, flush mounted brass handles, working lock with original key. 6 1/2" x 21" x 10 1/2". Edge chips, shrinkage cracks. 1920s Harvard newspaper article found inside. Josiah Bartlett, Jr. was the grandson of the Member of the Continental Congress from New Hampshire, who was the first delegate to vote for independence and the second signer of the Declaration of Independence after John Hancock. This Bartlett graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1819, his writing box possibly a gift marking that occasion.
