Royal Navy : A teak garden bench with brass plaque inscribed ' Built from the timbers of HMS Defiance 1860 - 1932 ' . 60 3/4"
HMS Defiance was the last wooden line-of-battle ship
launched for the Royal Navy, becoming the Devonport torpedo and mining schoolship in 1884 . She was sold in 1931 for dismantling at Plymouth. Doige's Annual for 1932 poignantly describes her as " the last of England's Wooden Walls "
