Ringing of the Opening Bell at the New York
Mercantile Exchange |
|
The NYMEX Holdings, Inc. is the
largest physical commodity-based futures exchange and
clearinghouse in the world,
Since the New York Mercantile
Exchange was founded in 1872 with 62 dairy merchants, its
members have demonstrated considerable humanitarian concern,
with endeavors ranging from the establishment of a Sick and
Destitute Fund and a Saturday and Sunday Hospital Fund, to
direct aid to victims of the 1875 Galveston fire and the San
Francisco earthquake of 1906. During the First World War, the
Exchange contributed $15,000 to the Red Cross and nearly
$25,000 to the War Work campaign. Before the United States
entered the Second World War, the Exchange contributed a
mobile kitchen to the War Relief Society of Great Britain.
Since 1989, the Exchange's primary philanthropic vehicle has
been the NYMEX Charitable Foundation, with hundreds of members
and staff continuing to contribute time and resources to
communal efforts |

Loud jackets,
louder voices, wild gestures
In the Exchange's famous trading rings, traders shout buy and
sell offers to each other and trade billions of dollars worth
of oil, gold, silver, natural gas, electrical power, and other
commodities.
Distinctive, colored jackets and strong voices make all the
difference for traders who gesture frantically as they compete
to buy and sell orders for themselves and hundreds of
thousands of customers. This unique, face-to-face method of
trading — called open outcry — serves to make trading on the
Exchange extremely fluid, quick, and exciting.
The winning bidder will see the excitement of trading in
the rings. At the Exchange museum, you can see how futures
trading developed and how it's used today to buy or sell
strategic global commodities. |

The Exchange has played host to a
number of New York politicians including governor George
Pataki; senators Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer; NYC
mayor Michael Bloomberg; and former NYC mayors Rudolph
Giuliani, David N. Dinkins, and Edward Koch. |
