Growing up Vilma
was on the small side and had to convince his coaches in high
school that he wanted to be a linebacker and not a wide
receiver. |

|
|
Vilma played in 47 games, starting 37
contests, and recorded 371 tackles (234 solo), three sacks, 30
stops for losses, seven FR, four FF, one INT and 12 PD.
His 371 tackles rank seventh on the school’s career-record
list behind LB Ray Lewis (388, 1993-95), Darrin Smith (401,
1989-92), Michael Barrow (423, 1989-92), Scott Nicholas (456,
1978-80), George Mira Jr. (490, 1984-87) and Dan Morgan (532,
1997-2000). Jon has been a three-time Academic All-Big
East Conference and two-time Butkus Award nominee
(semi-finalist in 2002 and finalist in 2003). He was selected
All-American first-team by The NFL Draft Report, American
Football Coaches Association and Walter Camp, added
second-team honors from Sports Illustrated and the Associated

All-District choice, added first-team All-Big East Conference
and Academic All-Big East choice as a senior |

As a freshman Jonathan recieved
All-American selection by Rivals.com. He recorded 38 tackles
(29 solo) and a PD in 10 games. He made his collegiate
debut with a season-high 10 tackles (eight solo) vs. McNeese
State. Vilma was listed as the No. 83 overall prospect in
Florida by Super Prep while attending Coral Gables (Fla.) High
and was credited with 11 sacks and 138 tackles as a senior.
Vilma set a school record with 109 solo tackles as a senior.
adn was Miami Herald Class 6A-5A All-Dade first-team
selection. He was rated the sixth-best overall player in
Dade County and 20th-best player in the state of Florida by
the Miami Herald and named the No. 4 outside linebacker in
Florida by the Florida Times-Union Super 75 list. Vilma
is regarded as one of the nation’s top-60 players by Florida
Prep Football. He was a three-year letter winner and two-year
team captain in football. |

Jonathan led the team for the
third-straight year with 127 tackles (81 solo), one sack, 12
stops for losses, three PD, a FF and three FR. Vilma was
chosen unanimous All-Big East Conference and Academic All-Big
East first-team choice and a semi-finalist for the Butkus
Award as a junior. He was s elected Verizon Academic
All-American and All-District III first-team selection, also
named the University of Miami’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year
for the 2002-03 academic year. Vilma was the recipient of the
10th Annual Walter Kichefski Football Scholarship Endowment
Award, presented annually to the top scholar-athlete of the
football program by the Kichefski family and the UM Athletic
Hall of Fame. Vilma started every game at MLB as a junior,
leading the team with a career-high 133 tackles (75 solos),
including two sacks, eight stops for losses, five PD, two FR
and a FF while serving as defensive team captain. He wa the
All-Big East Conference and Academic All-Big East first-team
choice as a sophomore and led team with 79 tackles (49 solo),
five PD, an INT, and two FR. |

Jonathan Vilma was
selected by the Jets in the first round (12th overall) of the
2004 NFL Draft. Vilma has played in 32 games, starting 30,
collecting 305 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, four INT for 60
yards, eight PD, five FF and two FR in two seasons. He
became only the third Jet to earn AP NFL Defensive Rookie of
the Year honors and first since DE Hugh Douglas captured the
award in 1995. Jonathan was also named Football Digest’s
Defensive Rookie of the Year and to the Pro Football Writer’s
All Rookie team. Vilma earned AFC Defensive Rookie of the
Month honors for November after he recorded 48 tackles, an INT,
one PD and a FR. |

Giant Stadium is home to the NY Jets and to Jonathan Vilma.
The Giants were the primary tenant at the stadium until 1984, when the New York
Jets moved from Shea Stadium to Giant Stadium. Currently, nearly all of the
