Description
Illustrator - Salem, Virginia and New York, New York, 1886-1968. From the estate of Cabell and the late Shirley Brand. Oil on canvas, double-sided painting. One side, illustration panting of young woman in white gown and older woman in blue dress in conversation. Interior scene with dresser, mirror, and chair with hat box. Signed lower right, "Walter Biggs/date ?". 33" x 24" s.s., in silverleaf and painted frame to 39" x 30". Verso, in landscape format showing tree, figures on path, and iron fence. Is a Salem, VA street scene - the tree and studio are still standing. 24" x 33" s.s., in late 20th century gold frame to 30" x 39". Sandwiched to recto painting. Along with a wooden adjustable display easel, 37" H. with 63" L. peg adjusted segment. Brand was born at 300 Second Street. Illustrator Walter Biggs’ mother and sister lived next door and Walter himself was a friend of the family who played bridge with Mr. Brand’s father. The tree in the painting was in the Biggs’ front yard, and Mr. Brand would climb it while growing up. Mr. Brand later bought the painting of the tree at a Walter Biggs estate auction in the late 1960’s, and after sending it to be cleaned, it was discovered that the painting was actually two-sided. On the verso, a Harper's Bazaar painting was revealed.
