Description
Circa 1840. All with gilt Classical motif stencil decoration on black ground. Having handwoven caned seats - three recently recaned. 17" seat height. One with reduced height. Though it can not be verified, according to the family, the chairs were used during the wedding of Napoleon I great nephew, Charles Bonaparte (1851-1921), who was an American from Baltimore. He was secretary of the Navy and then Attorney General under Teddy Roosevelt. A member of the family is believed to have purchased the chairs upon Charles' death.
