This is an Islamic calligraphy of finely sawn wood elements, which was mounted on black velvet, which was laid down on cardboard. The calligraphy shows the names of Allah, Muhammad, Ali and his sons Hassan and Hussain. The mention of these names refers to a Shiite background. The names are framed with strips of wood that become floral ornaments in the corners.



The work is dated on the lower right. The number 340 is probably to be complemented by a ‘1’, and thus reads 1340. Whether one applies the Arab or Persian calendar, the calligraphy surely dates from the beginning of the 20th century. The work is matted and mounted in a gilt frame. The wooden elements of the calligraphy are broken in a few places. The cardboard is a bit wavy probably caused by humidity. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 81.5 x 69 cm, the velvet covered cardboard measures 66 x 48 cm.
