Buddhist symbols of good fortune on the shell

Provenance: from an important private collection in Austria

This Tibetan temple drum, crafted from hand-carved and polychrome painted wood, originates from the 19th century. The shell is decorated with Buddhist symbols of good fortune, such as the lotus flower – the symbol of purity – the eternal knot, the shankha or conch, two goldfish, symbolizing fearlessness of drowning in the Ocean of Suffering, as well as the treasure vase, representing longevity, wealth, prosperity and wisdom, and the dharmacakra or Wheel of Life. The symbols are framed by depictions of dragons and meander bordures are painted between the shell and the drum surface. The drum can be mounted on the included stick handle with a large loop in the upper area. This instrument with a low tone is used as for religious ceremonies in temples and monasteries.

The large temple drum is in generally good condition with age-related traces of wear, such as bumps, paint chipping and a repaired crack in the shell which is barely noticeable due to the rich decorations. The handle stick shows minor dry cracks and dents. The drum measures 73 cm in diameter and 168 in overall height when mounted.
