History The Bicentennial Coin set was the first commemorative coin set in decades due to the banning of them. Earlier commemorative coins had been taken advantage of by collectors and imitators, leading Congress to simply remove them from circulation and prevent the minting of more. Nixon signed the bill allowing for these coins on December 31st of 1970.
