His work, "Valley of Tears," achieved a third place medal in the Nationals of 1884, which he created while in Rome. A year later he won the same medal with his piece "The Death of the Prince of Viana." Three years later he settled in Rome, attending drawing classes and learning the Watman technique for watercolor on paper. Later he would travel to Vienna, Munich, London, and St. Petersburg to further his studies. In Italy he spent long periods in Venice to pain the views the city offered, most especially those of the internal patios. He died in 1832, closely tied to the Vatican.
