Description: Part printed and part manuscripted license issued by the City of New York, Second Day of MArch, 1793 by Richard Varick Esquire and MAyor. Licenese issued to Fredrick(Frederick) Shonnard of the Sixth Ward for 50 Pounds. Fredrick Shonnard hath obtained a License to keep an In or Tavern for retailing strong or Spiritous Liquors in his Dwelling House.He shall not keep an Inn or Tavern or suffer or permit any Cock Fighting, Gaming, or Playing with Cards or Dice, or keep any Billiard-Table, or Shuffle-Board, within the Inn or Tavern by him to be kept, or within any Outhouse, Yard or Garden belonging thereunto; then this Recognizance to be void, else to remain in full Force.Signed in a clear and legible hand, Richd. Varick. On hand laid paper with regular horizontal and verticle lines.

History: Biography:Richard Varick (1753-1831) was a New York attorney and statesman who lived at 52 Wall Street. He served in the American Revolution and achieved the rank of colonel; he was the military secretary to General Schuyler, the recording secretary for George Washington, and an aide to General Benedict Arnold. After the war, Varick was the recorder of New York City from 1783 to 1789. He served in the New York State Assembly and was appointed the Attorney General of New York State in 1789; he was also the mayor of New York from 1790 to 1801 and the president of the Society of the Cincinnati from 1806 to 1831. He married Maria Hoffman Roosevelt in 1786. Richard Varick was a trustee of the New York Society Library from 1794 to 1796 and was chairman from 1810 to 1816.Fredrick Shonnard- A note places him on Cherry St. in New York City, the premier area which was home to the First Presidential Mansion on 1 Cherry St. and home to silversmith Ephraim Brasher living at 5 Cherry.
