Description
Saloon Cigar Lighter
Material: Brass
Construction: Sculpted brass
Features: This brass eagle stands in a tripod formation on two legs and a fanning tail. The central body is very much vase-shaped, but the artful detail of the wings, tail, legs, and head have given it a convincing eagle-shape. From its mouth a tube protrudes, with a cap on a thin chain attached to a loop on its beak.
Style: Early Deco Influenced
Period: 19th Century
Size: H. 7.5x W. 4.5x D. 3.5"
Weight: 1lb 9.6 oz
Condition: Though the brass has grown dull with handling over the years. The cap that normally goes over the hole in the crown of its head is missing, but the statue itself is not chipped or missing any pieces.
History: Used in saloons to light cigars, gas jet lighters such as these fell out of use with the advent of portable, disposable lighters in the early 1900s. They remain popular as decoration pieces and collector items.
