Teppichsammler 1960 plate 38
7ft. 3in. x 3ft. 4in.
Caucasus dated by Schuermann 17th century
Condition: very good, both ends fractually rewoven, some spots of low pile, one old repair in field
Wool warp, wool weft, wool pile
It was not hard to decide which piece to place on the cover of the catalog for our third sale. This rug easily won that honor.
First published by Dr. Ulrich Schuermann as plate 38 in his Bilderbuch fuer Teppichsammler in 1960 and again in 1974 as plate 93 in his far more well-known and famous Caucasian Rugs, this rug is a charmer that every collector would love to own.
Dr. Schuermann dated it to the 17th/18th century and suggested that it was woven by Armenians. He also placed it in the Kuba rug section. T
He also stated that it could possibly be the smallest of its type, yet the design is well proportioned. Again, we agree. We know that it is unique for such a small rug to exhibit the beauty and powerful design of the much larger Dragon carpets, which due to their size are far more difficult to view and display.
