Description
Konya region fragment, published Schuermann Teppiche aus dem Orient 1976 page 59
9ft. 5in. x 6ft. 3in.
Turkey dated by Schuermann 17/18th century
Condition: reduced in length and width, some areas low pile, few spots old repair
Wool warp, wool weft, wool pile
This is a most unusual and beautiful large carpet fragment. Since we are hesitant to attribute it to a specific provenance, we will go along with Dr. Schuermanns assessment. He attributed it to the Konya region when he published it on page 59 of Teppiche aus dem Orient in 1976.
Dating it to the 17th/18th century seems plausible since it exhibits the exceptional wool quality and deeply saturated dyes associated with Anatolian rugs from this period. This piece, however, was most certainly made in a workshop rather than in a village environment like so many of the other rugs produced in this region.
The field design of extremely large flowering plants placed in rows is definitely eye-catching, particularly on account of the vibrant, brilliant dyes that have fortunately been preserved. It is a collectors piece that can either be placed on the floor or hung on a wall.
