This lot comprises one bottle of 1993 vintage Château Valandraud from the Saint-Émilion appellation in Bordeaux.

Saint Émilion is next to Pomerol one of the best-known appellations on the right river bank of the Gironde. Merlot is the predominant grape variety here. As in Graves, Saint Émilion has its own classification for the wines produced there, updated approximately every ten years; the last time being in 2012.

Although it rained occasionally in Bordeaux during 1993, the vintage is today viewed as being underrated and full of surprises. This wine can undoubtedly be counted as one of those. A first-class wine, of which just 350 cases were produced.

The 1993 Valandraud was last awarded 93 points by Robert Parker in 1997. Wine Spectator magazine gave it a score of 89 points in 1996 and it last received 90 points from French wine critic Jean-Marc Quarin in 2012. Swiss Bordeaux expert René Gabriel rated the wine 18 out of 20 points in 2013.

The fill level is excellent (into neck). The label and capsule are in perfect condition.

Château Valandraud

Château Valandraud is a small, young winery in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux. Its story began in 1989, when Jean-Luc Thunevin and his wife Murielle Andraud acquired a plot of 0.6 hectares in Saint-Émilion. Over the years, they bought more land, as well as a garage that served as the winery. The first vintage of 1500 bottles, each sold at an individual price of 13 euros, was produced in 1991. Just four years later, Château Valandraud was awarded a higher score than Château Pétrus by Robert Parker. The Valandraud wine is considered the first “Vin de garage”, a term given to wines produced in very small quantities with high quality standards.

Today, Château Valandraud owns 4.5 hectares of vineyard area, planted with Merlot (65 %), Cabernet Franc (30 %) as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec (5 % in total). Between 15,000 and 20,000 bottles are produced every year.
