4th century AD. A flat-section hoop with expanding facetted shoulders, rectangular plaque with red glass insert, reserved white 'SPQR' legend. Representing the phrase 'Senatus Populusque Romani' ('The Senate and People of Rome'), this legend suggests that its original wearer was a political office-holder, perhaps a senator. Cf.
