6th-10th century AD. A hollow-cast padlock modelled as a standing horse, elliptical in section with notched mane, ring-and-dot detailing to the flanks and legs; hinged bar forming the tail with loop for attachment, hole to the head to accept the lower end of the bar, hole to the chest to accept the key. 50 grams, 70mm (2 3/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the 1990s.
