Description
800-600 BC. A slender chalcedony seal with standing figure between rearing beasts, accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder seal of chalcedony, 22.5 x 11 mm. In the middle stands a god with four wings, legs astride, and holding off on either side a reared up quadruped, on the left a horned animal, on the right a winged sphinx. This is a Neo-Babylonian or Neo-Assyrian seal, circa 800-600 BC, cut with a mixture of the cutting wheel and the drill. It is in a good state of preservation.' 5.23 grams, 23mm (1"). From an important collection of Classical and Near Eastern seals formed in the late 1970s and early 1980s; the property of a London gentleman. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined by the late Professor Lambert in the 1980s and many are accompanied by Professor Lambert's own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. It is accompanied by a museum-quality impression of the seal's design.
