Description
Neolithic, 4000-2500 BC. A mixed group of barbed and tanged flint arrowheads of varying forms, in transluscent coloured flint. 5.93 grams total, 24-35mm (1 - 1 1/2"). Ex Bernard C. Pickard collection, Hampshire, UK; formerly in Alexander Cotton collection; previously in Rev. George R. Buick collection; found County Antrim, 19th century. Rev. George R. Buick (died 1904) was a Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland from 1885 and vice president of the Royal Historical & Archaeological Association of Ireland; among other things, he published a paper entitled Irish Flint Arrowheads in the 1895 issue of their Journal (a copy included) and formed a large collection that was dispersed at auction in Dublin, following his death. Bernard Pickard has long had an interest in Stone Age and other artefacts; he was a close friend of Richard Hattatt and inspired Richard to write his four superb books on brooches and provided the text for the introduction to the animal brooches section in pp.158-160.
