Handwritten receipt, Jan. 15, 1857 [No place, probably Alabama]: “receive of Martha nanson Seven dollars and a half for Robert Weir Service rendered in cetching a negro with Hugh G. Weir”. Unevenly trimmed slip, 3 x 7.5 ins.
H.G.Weir was listed in the 1860 Census as a farmer in Prairie Bluff, Alabama. Weir himself owned 16 slaves, 7 female and 9 male, ranging in age from an infant to a man of 60. Robert, probably his younger brother, then 21, was later a Civil War Sergeant in the Alabama Infantry.
Condition
Unevenly trimmed slip but in very good condition.
