1 pg., with original envelope.
To Rev. C.[harles] H. Hall, D.D. Rector, informing him that a Parsonage would soon be built for him and his annual salary increased. The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, built in 1844 on G Street in the nation’s capital, was the parish church of former Secretary of War Jefferson Davis before he left Washington to become President of the Confederacy. During the War, Rev. Hall, a strong Unionist, inspired Davis’ successor, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, to regularly attend services, as did 50 of Lincoln’s Generals and his Private Secretary, John Hay. Dr. Hall himself was later one of four Washington clergymen to officiate at the White House funeral of the assassinated President.
