1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats Cabinet and Card Matched Pair The Charles Gross Tobacco Company of Philadelphia issued a series of photographic baseball cards in 1887, which are commonly referred to as "Kalamazoo Bats" in honor of the Kalamazoo Bats tobacco brand name, which is advertised at the base of each card. Also issued were a much scarcer series of cabinet-sized photos of Philadelphia Athletics players. The cabinet cards are extremely striking, in part because of their distinctive outdoor on-the-field shots used, and are most easily identified by the small "C. Gross & Co; Copyright 1887" stamp embossed directly on the photo. This lot is comprised of two cards: The first is a traditional N690 Kalamazoo Bat card (measuring 2.25 x 4 inches) of Philadelphia catcher Gunning. The second is a matched Kalamazoo Bat cabinet card, also of Gunning, featuring the same pose. This is the first time we have ever seen a matched pair assembled. The extreme rarity of the larger (4.25 x 6.5 inches) Kalamazoo Bat cabinet cards makes assembling a matched pair a very difficult collecting challenge. Each of these cards is an extremely rare and desirable nineteenth-century sample card. Together, they present an even more significant collecting opportunity. The small Kalamazoo Bat card is in overall Excellent condition, clean front and back, with a hint of rounding to the corners, and an ever so slight fading to the image as is so commonly found on photographic cards from this era. The Kalamazoo Bat cabinet card is in spectacular Near Mint condition, with the quality of the photograph extraordinarily bold and crisp. Total two cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000.
