1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats Mays, Mets Exceedingly rare New York American Association player Kalamazoo Bats card of Mets pitcher Al Mays. The Mets players are of a similar (some say even greater) rarity than Kalamazoo Bat Giants players. Some consider the Mets a set unto themselves, distinct even from the Giants. Each is pictured with no hat (Giant players are all wearing hats) and players are posed in a manner very similar to the "spotted ties" of the Old Judge set. We believe this to be the first Mets Kalamazoo Bats sample we have ever offered at auction. This card was once a part of the Lawrence Kurzrok Collection. Kurzrok was a contemporary of Jefferson Burdick, and in his day he was one of the leading collectors in the world. Much of the Kurzrok Collection was purchased and sold by future Robert Edward Auctions President Robert Lifson back in the late 1970s. This card was among those sold at that time, and has been consigned to this auction directly by the collector who purchased it over 20 years ago for the then princely sum of $400. A tremendous example of an incredible early rarity. A remnant of a stamp hinge is on the reverse. Slight corner wear but overall very clean and strong, with superb photo quality. Strong Vg-Ex.
