Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1887 Kalamazoo Bats Detroit BBC Team Card Crisp, gem Kalamazoo Bat team card of the Detroit BBC. The Detroit Wolverines were the Champions of the National League in 1887, led by sluggers Dan Brouthers and Sam Thompson (who led the league in batting as well with a .372 average). Incredibly bold photo, with perfect contrast. Detroit is particularly rare among the six teams in the set. The offered card is the Copeland example (Lot #806 in the Copeland catalog). In the 1991 Copeland auction, this card sold for $8,250. The card has not seen the light of day since, and has been consigned to this auction directly by the purchaser at the landmark sale. Graded in the Copeland sale as Nr/Mt-Mt. Stricter grading standards of today might take into account an ever so slight diamond cut (which is not uncommon with cards from this era in general), thus we assign it a slightly more conservative grade of Near Mint. Harshly graded EX 60 by SGC. This is an extraordinary example of this great rarity, with a very significant hobby provenance. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000.
