"Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live ""one lot at a time"" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.

1888 E223 G & B Gum Daily

Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & B's were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball card issues. G & Bs are also one of the scarcest of all nineteenth-century issues. Offered is a sample from this unusual set of Chicago Nationals catcher Bill Dailey. This is a photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable type in the eyes of most collectors (G & Bs were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). The offered sample is a mid-grade example. It appears that some general surface soiling has in part been gently removed with an erasure, and the back has various imperfections including the remnants of some period ink stamps (which is not uncommon to find on cards from this era) and general soiling. A very rare sample in respectable but mid-grade condition from this highly regarded and very elusive set. Good condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000."
