Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.

Unusual 1889 Goodwin Proof Cabinet

Upon first glance this card appears to be an N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet of "Clarke, C. Brooklyn." The photograph includes the traditional "Copyright 1889 Goodwin & Co. NY" to the left, and the player identification at the base of the photo, both in white lettering. The mount, however, instead of featuring an ad for Old Judge Cigarettes, features an ad for a Baltimore-based professional photo studio. Referring to the photo above, the base of the mount reads "From Walzl's Imperial Portrait Studios" above two Baltimore addresses. Apparently this studio provided some of the photographs for Goodwin, perhaps taking pictures of visiting clubs when they were in the area. This is a particularly beautiful cabinet card, with the obvious use of a magnificent studio backdrop giving the image an extra point of interest and great visual appeal. A very unusual and fascinating card with tremendous photo detail. Crisp and clean front and back. Gold leaf accent is still intact along edges. Near Mint condition.Reserve $300. Estimate $800/$1,200.
