Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1891 New York vs. Cleveland Yearbook Style Program Rare 28-page New York Nationals yearbook-style program features a portrait of Buck Ewing on the cover. This style program has special significance as interior pages feature portraits and elaborate biographies of players, making this program double as a very early style of yearbook. The Players League of 1890 was over, and apparently all was forgiven, as Ewing, O'Rourke, Keefe, Connor, and other stars rejoined the New York Nationals. The 1891 Giants also included future Hall of Famers Mickey Welch and Amos Rusie. Few teams of the era sported so many high-caliber Hall of Famers. Because this is the only example of this program we have ever seen, we cannot be certain that Ewing's cover portrait is not one of a series, but we suspect that this is the only way the program was printed (all with Ewing on the cover), and that Ewing was chosen to appear on the cover because of his great prominence. The center scoring section provides preprinted lineups for a game between the New York and Cleveland Nationals. The program is neatly scored in pencil. The program has some general wear, including some soiling to the cover, hints of vertical creasing most likely from long ago being folded (program does lie flat) and the center page has separated from the staples. Still a very substantial presentation of this rarity, with clean interior pages featuring photographic portraits and biographies of the many stars of this great team. Good to Very Good condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $500/$1,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
