Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.

Circa 1924 KC Monarchs Broadside

Incredible Negro League broadside features the 1924 Kansas City Monarchs. A red pennant identifies the team as the "Worlds Colored Champions." 1924 was the first year of the Negro League World Series, which was won by the Kansas City Monarchs. In the background, above the panoramic style photograph of the team lined up, is a stadium panoramic photograph of the first game of the 1924 Negro League World Series, identified in white lettering as follows: "First Colored World Series, Opening Game at Philadelphia, October 3, 1924, Monarchs vs. Philadelphia, Attendance 18,500." We believe the broadside is designed to advertise a game during the 1925 season, and that the blank space of the design at left is provided specifically to allow the addition of game details (time, place, and name of opposing team) of the advertised contest against the World Champion Monarchs. An extraordinary early Negro League game advertising poster featuring the legendary Kansas City Monarchs, and picturing both the team and a game-in-progress panoramic shot of the then recently won first Negro League World Series. Broadside measures 11 x 16.5 inches. Beautifully matted and framed (frame measures 22 x 16.5 inches). It has a single very fine vertical center crease, visible only upon very close inspection, otherwise in incredible Near Mint to Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
