Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1946 Jackie Robinson Soda Advertising Poster Very unusual poster issued in 1946 to advertise Cremo Sparkling Ale ("Connecticut's Best") features Jackie Robinson, then still with the Montreal Royals of the International League, shaking hands with Brooklyn manager Leo Durocher. Jackie Robinson is in Montreal Royals uniform. The photo was taken during a series of exhibition games between the Dodgers and their Montreal farm club played in Havana, Cuba, in 1946. The caption to the picture reads in part, "…The Royals star may someday play with the Dodgers." The poster is part of a series issued by Cremo, entitled "Cremo Sports Flash," featuring news relating to the world of sports, which were provided for display by merchants by Cremo, and which at the same time advertised Cremo Sparkling Ale. This is an extraordinarily significant poster, because it is the only display item, or commercial advertising printed item of any kind for that matter, which features Jackie Robinson while still with the Montreal Royals, and making reference to the possibility of his someday breaking the color barrier and joining the Dodgers in the Major Leagues. The poster is printed on glossy poster paper and measures 14 x 17 inches. There is one horizontal crease at the middle (possibly as originally sent by Cremo, we have never seen or heard of another surviving example from the series to verify), and some light watermarks along the right edge, which do not significantly detract from its otherwise Excellent overall appearance and extremely impressive display value. This 1946 Cremo Soda advertisement captures baseball at the threshold of a groundbreaking era. Ideal for framing. Very Good condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
