Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
Circa 1909 Winkleman's Bread Pin There's rare – and there's rare! In the world of baseball pin sets, it would be hard to find a rarity of greater magnitude than Winkleman's Quaker Bread. Offered is the only example we have ever encountered, anywhere, ever. Similar in design to the popular Morton's Bread advertising pin set featuring Detroit Tigers players, the Winkleman's Quaker Bread pins feature players from a minor league club from Memphis, Tennessee. The player featured is identified as Baerwald, who also appears in the 1909 Colgan's Chips card set. Winkleman's Bread was apparently not quite as popular as Morton's Bread, or perhaps Memphis, Tennessee, had fewer baseball fans, as these Winkelman's are as rare as turtle teeth (we reference a turtle because, in fact, a turtle is pictured below the player's portrait, which is almost certainly a reference to the Memphis team's name, as opposed to, say, commentary on Baerwald's base-running skills). Diameter: 1.25 inches. Ex-Mt. Reserve $200. Estimate $500/$1,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
