Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1887 H891 Tobin Litho Trade Card Collection of 8 Tobin Lithographers of New York issued this colorful set of ten baseball trade cards in 1887. Offered are 8 of the 10 cards comprising this unusual nineteenth-century baseball issue. Included are Andrews, Dan Brouthers, Ferguson, Hines, Tim Keefe, Mike Kelly, McCormick, and Smiling Mickey Welch (missing only Anson and Glasscock for completion). Each card features a caricature of a major league baseball player with an amusing slogan and the player's name below. These cards were designed to allow merchants to overprint their own ads on the front or blank backs, for use as an advertising vehicle. Cards from this series are often found without any advertising, as is the case with this collection of eight cards. There is minor paper loss to the blank backs of each card, where they were long ago glued into an album, and two strips of clear tape are affixed to the reverse of all but two cards (Welch and Brouthers). The reverse imperfections are very minor, and the backs are otherwise remarkably clean. The fronts are solid Ex-Mt. A very impressive looking near set of this very unusual and attractive nineteenth-century issue. Total 8 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
