Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.

Nineteenth Century Baseball Comic Trade Card Collection (67)

In the 1880's merchants printed their names and addresses on colorfully illustrated cards to distribute as store advertisements. This collection of 65 assorted trade cards all have a baseball theme, and all feature colorful images of comical characters playing the game. Included are children, babies, and a variety of caricature ballplayers enjoying the national pastime. Printed on the cards are advertisements for sporting goods dealers, clothiers, gargling oil, grocers, and various other products and services. Almost all measure approximately 5 ½ x 4 inches or a little smaller, with the exception of five particularly impressive larger cards (4 x 7 inches.) Also included are two Goodwin & Company mechanical folding trade cards, which advertise the N172 Old Judges. An attractive and carefully selected representative collection of these fascinating nineteenth century cards. As is often the case with early trade cards, a few have minor back damage, overall the condition ranges from Good to Excellent (averaging Vg.) Nice looking collection of these scarce cards which represent such an outstanding value for collectors, and which would be difficult, and far more costly, to assemble one card at a time. Total 67 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
