N154 Duke Presidential Baseball Club Card

Incredibly high-grade sample from this extremely rare nineteenth century baseball related non-sport tobacco card set. Catalogued N154 and issued by Duke & Sons, the Presidential B.B. Club set is similar in dimensions (4.25 x 2.25 inches), design, and rarity to Kalamazoo Bats, but instead of ballplayers, they feature the presidential candidates of 1888, Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland, with impossibly large photographic heads ("Heads-Up" style) placed on baseball player bodies, posed in various baseball scenes. On this card, Benjamin Harrison is preparing to field, hands on knees. He may be in a catcher's crouch, as there is a catcher's mask on the ground beside his right foot. We understand why he is not wearing the catcher's mask. It would never fit on his unbelievably giant head. He is, however, also not wearing gloves, which we cannot explain away so easily, though perhaps he is planning to simply block any balls hit or thrown his way with his monstrously huge head. We suspect these issues were not addressed at great length in preparing this set for production, though great lengths were gone to in the creation of a reasonably realistic looking stadium backdrop. In our opinion, this is a condition "miracle card." Razor sharp corners. Perfect contrast. Perfectly clean both front and back. PSA has graded this beauty NM 7. We grade this gem "Stone Cold Mint." Harrison won the election of 1888. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
